For Prospective Models:

From time to time I need people to help me solve photographic problems by serving as models. In return for their help I compensate them with free or low-cost photos. Terms are always negotiable, but models always recieve a selection of the best photos from the work we do together.
In addition, I am open to artistic collaboration (we work together on a common project) and trades (you help with my project and I'll help with yours).

Projects Include:

Technical Tests: Testing a new lens or camera, fine tuning a lighting setup, or material for a new post-processing technique. I never use a new technique or equipment on an important job without testing it first. For something like a lens or lighting the only meaningful test is to try it on a real person.

Portfolio and Gallery Pieces: Like any photographer, I like to show off my best work. Some of my display work comes from paid commissions, but that doesn't alway work out. First, I sell confidentiality. Many of my clients want to keep their pictures private. Second, what the customers pay me to do is not always what I want to do for myself.

Creative Experimentation: Ideas rarely come to me fully formed. Most often I have to get someone on camera and experiment a little before things come together. And coming back to the commercial, it is easier to sell a new concept if I have examples to show.

Who I am Looking For:

You don't have to be a model -- or look like one.
No experience required. I'm willing to take a chance
on a  beginner if you seem right for the project. As to looks, I get bored with conventional pretty. I enjoy the challenge of distinctive looks and outside-the-mainstream beauty. I will consider all types and styles, although some projects require specific types or looks.

-- All participants must be legally adult -- at least 18 years or older
-- and must sign a model release allowing me to show the photos in galleries, online or in portfolios.

What do I want from you?

Not that much. Two or three hours of your time and creative energy to start. Then possibly more sessions in the coming months. Any input you have for ideas, or anything you can contribute in terms of clothes/costumes, locations or props is always welcome.

What do you get?

The goal is to make really great pictures. Everyone who completes a session and signs a release gets photos from the session. All the photos I give out are fully finished and retouched to the same standards as the photos I do for myself  -- not straight from the camera unfinished shots -- so the quantity is limited. Exact terms are always negotiable, so if you need something specific ask and we can talk.

What's the next step?

Just click the link below and tell me a little about yourself
and what you'd like to do. If you can, include a link to some
photos or attach a picture or two to the email.

A quick FAQ -- the questions almost everybody asks:

Do I have to pose nude?

Maybe not totally nude, but sometimes pretty close to it. It is a  plus if  you are comfortable with nudes, but if not we can talk about your limits. For most projects you should be open to working in lingerie, 'implied' or semi-nude.

What if I've never modeled before?

Not a problem. I work with people of all experience levels, and I know beginners sometimes need a little extra time and coaching. I don't mind some extra effort if  I see potential for good pictures.

I'd like to try it, but I'm not sure ... ?

So talk to me. Let me know your questions or concerns and I'll answer as honestly as I can.
For total beginners the first session can be on a "no fault" basis. All you have to do is show up and give it an honest try. If it's really not working we'll call it off -- no hard feelings.

How much time does it take?
Do you do more than one set with the same model?

A typical session is about 2 to 3 hours on camera, plus some setup time. In most cases, several short sessions are more productive than one long one, but if one of us is traveling we may go  for a longer session. I like to work with models on a long-term basis. It's not unusual for me to work with a model for 5 years or longer, working 3 or 4 times a year.

What do you do with the pictures?

These projects are primarily a means to creative and artistic growth. If the project is successful I may exhibit photos on my websites or in galleries. It is possible some of photos could be published in magazine or book form, although I do not have any publication plans right now.
Just for the record, I have never made any significant money directly from art projects but my reputation as an artist has helped sell commercial work.

I want to do pictures, but I'm not sure I want people to see them ...

Paying clients have full control over their photos, but for tests or trades
I will ask you to sign a release allowing me to show the photos.

Some basic information for people who might want to model for my projects. Most of the people who model for me are fairly inexperienced, often total beginners, so this is an attempt to cover the basics.

One page is not enough to cover everything,
so feel free to email with questions.

will give you an idea of what I  do.
